Reviews of this Book

The authors of "The Three Faces of EVE" stole the identity of a woman, re-named her "Eve" and wrote a book witout once confronting the ethic of using private interviews without informed consent. The book became a movie, the authors profited, the woman did not.

Although people in mental health professions often do this, it seems to me unethical. The therapeutic work done was in partnership, the profiting was not.

Just a comment, not a review. Co-author, Dr. Hervey M. Cleckley, participated in research with severe mental illness using vitamins beginning in the 1930s. The results were reported as being miraculous, but vitamins as treatment for mental illness became a severely suppressed form of treatment, rejected outright by the medical establihsment. Cleckley’s name is associated with the following: "Nicotinic Acid in the Treatment of Atypical Psychotic States Asociated with Malnutrition." JAMA 112:2107-2110, 1939. Also, "The Effect of Nicotinic Acid in Stupor, Lethargy and Various Other Psychiatric Disorders." Am Journal of Psychiatry 98:83-92, 1941.

There have been at least 2 later books written about "Eve," including one that is autobiographical, I’m Eve. I’d suggest reading the latter. Many think the original psichiatrists who wrote _3 Faces..._ exploited her. In reading the other books about and by Eve, one sees how she would integrate, and then split again, always in 3’s as I recall. I think the explanation given in later books is that the integration was something she wasn’t ready for. Also, I think Eve doesn’t regard her splitting as due to abuse. Eve has been active in mental health movements, but definitely considers MPD/DID an illness. Neither abuse nor this issue is really addressed in this book, however. The book does, IMO, show the confusion of being MPD without knowing it.

I knew Dr. Corbett Thigpen personally. He was a great, kind, compassionate, wise man, and I cannot imagine him ever exploiting anyone.

I have read the book and seen the movie, and neither of them even touched on the other personalities. It didn’t show that the therapists did nothing but bring the case to light, in fact they made it worse. I’m Eve was much more of an in depth study of Chris Sizemore’s disorder. From her point of view, after integration. I’m Eve is a phenomenal book. Please read it!

I wanted to make a brief statement on your (The Garden People) review. It does not invalidate what you may believe, I would simply like to throw out the point.

The Three Faces of Eve was a book published in 1957. Do you know how many documented MPD (known today as Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID)cases there were by the time that book was written? There were around 100 cases (as I said, documented). Therefore, there was a very limited amount of precedence or comprehension of the disorder. The mere fact that Chris’s doctor didn’t misdiagnose her, in itself, is an accomplishment.

That book had to be made somewhat simplistic, in order to gain mass interest in the subject matter. In turn, the interest opened doors into the understanding and study of the disorder.

I do hope that this may shed new light on your view and give, in part, some understanding as to why it became a classic book in it’s area of focus.

Oh, and if you are interested in the subject, do read the book... the movies never completely grasps what the book holds.

Thank you for allowing me to voice myself, with absolutely no harsh intent.

The doctors that finally, truly helped her were Dr. Tsitos and Dr.Ham.

I was fortunate enough to know Chris and to live near her most of my life. She is a wonderful woman who overcame terrible odds which were mot really helped by Dr. Cleckly and Thigpin. Chris suffered more because of their egotistical use of HER life. Her book, "I’m Eve" is a beautifully written TRUE account of her life.

Dr. Thigpen used Chris to gain notoriety and to make money off the book "The Faces of Eve". When the movie debuted in Augusta, Ga, he told her it would extremely harmful to her to see it. She rode through the town and saw images everywhere of Joanne Woodward portraying her. She said it made her feel like a ‘thing’ and made her feel invisible. He even tried to stop her from writing "I’m Eve" claiming that he had the sole rights to the story of her life. She really suffered at the hands of this so-called doctor. She was very hesitant to speak poorly of him except in private. For someone to have suffered as she did, his book and the movie was a joke. It was a ‘Hollywood’ version that did not tell the true story. Sadly, her wonderful husband, Don, died several years ago. She moved to be near her son who is now a psychologist.

This book documents the identification of someone with MPD. However, it appears that the therapist did little to treat here or help here. In fact "Eve" had a number of other alters that never presented themselves to her therapist, and she later went on to write about the rest of the story from _her_ point of view. See I’m Eve, by Christine Sizemore

I haven’t read the book, but I’ve seen the movie; it struck me as a somewhat sensationalized and simplistic depiction of a multiple.

I have read part of the book but it was too full of jargon to understand. The book I’m Eve was much more interesting and showed things from her perspective. The Garden People have saved time by not reading it.
