Reviews of this Book

I have DID and Complex PTSD and this is by far the BEST book I have come across on these subjects. I have read it several times and still refer to it when I need a reminder that I’m not crazy. To Judith Herman, THANK YOU for writing this book.

It scared me half to death when I read it because it turned out to be a book about me. We don’t think I’m MPD, just very dissociative. But, the whole thing has sure turned my world upside down over the last year.

I found it to be one of the most informative texts in explaining similarities and differences in how trauma is experienced by and affects children and adults, and how recovery may proceed.

This is a wonderful resource that I would recommend for anyone working in a humanities feild. This book may be a tough read for the average person or victim of trauma but provides valuable information and insight to the misuderstood and under estimated phenomenon of trauma.

This book has been the most helpful reference I’ve found in working with adult survivors of sexual abuse. As a marrige and family therapist with a specialty in sexual abuse work with couples and individuals, Herman not provides the history re: post traumatic stress disorder, the struggle to get other psychiatrists to recognize it in women, but the very process of recovery. It is written for professionals and others who are concerned about this subject. Herman is as stimulating as a public speaker as she is author.

When I first got my copy of this book, I thought that it would just be another book on truama and nothing too remarkable. I was completely wrong! This book has many wonderful aspects that other books don’t include. It has specific information on ritual abuse or cult abuse and self harm. Best of all, the author of this book takes MPD very seriously and carefully to make clear that this is a valid diagnosis with valid reasoning. I definitely recommend this book. It isn’t *easy* reading, but it’s well worth the work. :o)
